Second Grade Goals and Expectations

Reading and Writing

Students will become proficient by:

Determining purpose in reading and writing 

Asking and responding to relevant questions

Determining relevant connections between texts, self to texts and texts to world

Developing vocabulary skills 

Understanding phonemic awareness in spelling

Applying reading strategies

 Increasing comprehension skills by monitoring comprehension and making corrections and adjustments when understanding breaks down.

Identifying setting, plot, characters, and main idea/message in books.

reading independently for multiple purposes over sustained periods of time

Reacting and responding  to many types of reading and writing.

Writing complete sentences (Complete indicates capital letter, subject, verb and punctuation.)

Writing Narrative, Informational and Persuasive pieces 

Understanding the writing process


Math

Students will become proficient through:

Using hands-on math experiences.

Discussing real-life problems.

Applying problem-solving strategies.

Experimenting with math concepts.

Understanding Place Value

Determining purpose for using numbers.

Knowing basic addition and subtraction facts.

Comprehending math relationships.

Identifying math symbols.

Using measurement.

Solving oral and written math problems in addition and subtraction.

Counting money and telling time.

Constructing graphs, charts, and models.

Science

Students will learn by participating in:

Plants, Engineering design, Properties of Matter, Force and Motion, Sound, Earth’s Changes, Landforms and Bodies of Water

Simple machines – force motion and gravity

Earth’s materials: rocks and soil

Exploratory units

Social Studies

Students will learn by participating in Units on:

Citizen, Government and Communities

U.S. and Missouri History- contributions of Inventors, Compare and contrast habitats and resources of Native Americans in Missouri, Then and Now Unit
